The Sterling Rain private investigation team finds itself fragmented once again as Matthew Rain must devote the majority of his time to writing a second novel with the lovely and famous Kelsey Timmons while his partner and girlfriend, Alissa Sterling, handles the bulk of the workload. At least she has help from her friend and part-time investigator, Leslie Evans, as well as her ever important, super perceptive canine sidekick, Sydney.
Kelsey’s tiny Pomeranian, Snickers, just rubs Sydney the wrong way. Snickers is not as submissive as he should be, given his status as a newcomer to Sydney’s territory, as well as his size. Alissa instructs Syd to behave despite his strong feelings of distaste, so he’s trying his best, but sometimes, instinct prevails.
While working a case, Alissa unknowingly consumes a poisoned cookie. She and the other victims soon piece clues together that point to another more intriguing case: someone is posing as an employee of Brown Sugar Bliss Bakery and delivering boxes of toxic cookies to businesses around town.
Alissa receives a delivery of hyacinths at her house from an anonymous sender. More floral deliveries soon follow, but the cards are never signed. She wonders if the flowers are somehow tied to the cookies, but she is baffled when Kelsey receives a similar arrangement at her cabin an hour away.
Though distracted by his inability to offer much aid, Matthew manages to keep on writing with Kelsey. Things are further complicated for him by a visit to his parents’ house, during which he introduces them to Alissa. They all seem to hit it off, but his mother’s concern over his split career focus might just drive a wedge between him and Alissa.
